G8 Pals / Keeping Them

Who Invites, And The Imbalance Nobody Mentions

In most friendships one person does more of the organising, and how that is handled determines whether it survives.

In nearly every friendship there is an initiator and a responder. It is rarely deliberate and rarely discussed. One person is simply more inclined to pick up the phone, and over time the other settles into being the one who is glad to be asked. This works perfectly well for years, right up until the initiator gets tired, does an audit, and discovers that if they stopped, nothing at all would happen. That discovery is corrosive out of all proportion to the facts.

It is worth separating two different things that feel the same. There is the friend who does not initiate but is delighted every time, turns up, is fully present and would do anything for you. And there is the friend who does not initiate because you are not, in truth, a priority. These look identical in a calendar and feel very different in a room. The test is not who sends the message, it is what happens once you are together.

If you are the responder in a friendship, the single most valuable thing you can do is initiate occasionally, badly, without waiting until you have a good idea. It does not need to be an event. It needs to be evidence that the person you are relying on to hold the friendship together is also being held. And if you are the initiator and you are worn out, say so gently rather than testing them with silence. Silence is a test almost nobody passes, because most people will read it as you being busy, which is what you told them you were.
